                                 J Indicates a family friendly opportunity.

 

JHabitat Healer

Volunteers will learn to identify and remove non-native invasive plants from our parks.  Once trained, volunteers can work on the project at their convenience.

 

Board Member

Local agencies are seeking interested volunteers to serve as Board Members.

The commitment ranges from attendance

at monthly meetings to participating in agency events.

 

Bloodmobile Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to assist staff with registration and the canteen at area blood drives.

Receptionist

Volunteers are needed to answer phones, greet visitors and do light office work.

 

Gift Shop Attendant

Several local agencies are looking for volunteers to staff their gift shops. Volunteers choose their own hours.

Book Sorter

Assist a local agency by sorting donated books into categories for a book sale. Volunteers can chose their own hours.

 

J Meal Delivery

Volunteers are needed for one hour a week at lunchtime to deliver hot meals to elderly and disabled persons living in our community. Must be a safe driver and use own vehicle.

 

 Museum Docent/Nature Preserve Aide

Area museums and nature sites need volunteers to provide tours, answer questions, and watch over exhibits, sharing the rich natural, historical and cultural heritage of Erie County.

 

Emergency Preparedness

Work with Ohio military police to assist civil authorities with emergencies in Ohio.

JMeal Host or Hostess

Assist staff, serve beverages and chat with the residents at mealtimes.

 

Advocate

Volunteers are needed to be a friend to clients with disabilities, listening to them, sharing time on an outing once or twice a month, and providing encouragement.

J Musician and Entertainer

Several elder care facilities are seeking volunteers to entertain their residents. Sing, play musical instruments, perform magic,

or skits.

 

Literacy Tutor

Volunteers are needed to listen to a child read and provide encouragement in a supervised setting.

Donations Sorting

Several agencies are seeking volunteers to help sort donations. Volunteers can help one time or on an ongoing basis.

 

Costume Character

Wear an agency mascot costume for educational and community events.

Interviewer

Volunteers are needed to interview local veterans and videotape their stories of wartime experiences.

 

Foster Grandparent

Volunteers are needed to share time and share interests with children who need the long-term love and support of a caring adult.

Information Desk

Volunteers are needed to greet visitors, provide directions and information, do errands and sort mail.

 

Activity Assistant

Many nursing facilities need friendly volunteers to assist residents on field trips, with crafts projects and playing bingo.

 

Drivers

Drive people of all ages to medical appointments within and beyond Erie County in an agency provided car.

 

Hostess

Volunteers are needed to refresh ice in water containers, pass out mail and supplies, and read to residents.

 

Guardian

Volunteers are needed to take guardianship of, or be an advocate for, a local incompetent person.

 

Tutor

Work one on one with behavior- and/or learning-disabled students, in the classroom or a supervised after school setting.

 

 

Health and Safety Instructor

Teach a class for the community on

topics such as First Aid, CPR, Blood-

borne Pathogens, Babysitting or

Tobacco Awareness.

                Seasonal & Short Term Needs

 

J Food Pantry

Volunteers are needed to help bag food and sort donations.

 

J Landscape Maintenance

Tend and groom park areas, plantings, and established gardens.

 

J Information booth attendant

Staff an information booth for an agency at local fairs and festivals.

Barber and Beauty Care

Provide in-home hair care to homebound clients of local agencies, and manicures to nursing home residents.

 

Trucking

Volunteers with vans or pick up trucks are needed on an on-call basis to help agencies transport donated items for their clients.

 

Emergency Management

Volunteers are needed to answer phones and/or do light computer work to track donations in the event of a large-scale emergency.

Telephone Aide

Volunteer from home assisting agencies with calling, scheduling and other

phone work.

 

        Folding and Sorting
Help local agencies prepare newsletters and other mailings. Could be done at the agency or sometimes at home.

      Computer Skills Instructor
Opportunities exist for a volunteer or volunteers to teach basic computer skills to senior citizens or agency clients.

Volunteer Host

Meet and greet volunteers at a construction site, insure their needs are met and all tasks to be performed that day are carried out.

Maintenance

Local agencies are looking

for volunteers willing to do light maintenance work such as painting, cleaning, and small repairs.

Donating gently used household items and office fixtures/equipment can help many non-profit agencies that serve those in need.

 

Erie County non-profit agencies and organizations that serve clients confidentially contact The Volunteer Center when needs arise. When donations come in, they are matched to agency requests.
